Sunday Morning Whale Watching with Pacific Whale Foundation
Photos by Adam Hevenor ..
We had a wonderful morning whale watch. The winds were very high so we motored around to be out of the surf and chop. We were entertained by over a dozen whales. The males vie for position around a female and jostle and head butt each other trying to get into the most favorable position as the primary escort. We saw lots of action but not many breaches. Whale watching is one of the wonders of Maui and this is their favorite breeding grounds.

The whales spend the summer in Alaska feeding on krill. They come to these waters to mate and to give birth. They do not eat anything while they are here.
They begin arriving here in October and November. There are between 5000 and 6000 whales here at the middle of the season. They become most active around this time of year after the babies are born and when the males are competing for the attentions of the females.
The surf at Ho’okipa Lookout .. the colors are so vibrant. Wind is normally so predictable here that it is the best beach in the United States to Wind Surf.
