A Day Trip to Lanai
by Nancy ~ February 27th, 2006. Filed under: Hawaii.Lanai is a small island a 8 miles off Maui which used to be owned by Dole and mainly pineapple fields. The entire island of Lanai was purchased in 1922 by entrepreneur Jim Dole for the then steep cost of $1.2 million. For many years, this island was the heart of Dole’s pineapple operations. In more recent years, however, high labor and transportation costs have made pineapple production uneconomic on this island paradise. By 1994, Dole ceased virtually all of its pineapple production on Lanai and moved it to Thailand and the Philippines. The current economy of this island clearly is tourism, although on a much smaller and more laid back scale than you will find on the other islands. In fact, there are only three hotels on the entire island. Two of them are now managed by The Four Seasons and both are gorgeous.
We took a day trip with our friends to this lovely little island to enjoy the wonderful beach, snorkeling and had lunch at the fabulous Four Seasons Hotel.
The Beach is Beautiful.
The snorkeling was terrific - lots of different fish.
The ferry ride over is about 45 minutes and we enjoyed the whale show. I love John’s t-shirt of the Shoes of Hawaii.

View from the restaurant at the Four Seasons.
The Lodge at Koele has really gorgeous gardens and a wonderful lodge feeling.
