Visitors in Maui

by Nancy ~ February 11th, 2007. Filed under: Hawaii.

We were delighted to have visitors here in Maui. My niece, Christine, came for the same week that some friends of ours were here on the island. We were able to do a number of fun things together and the whole week just flew. It was great. I was especially happy that Chrissy arrived right after the “Kona Winds” blew out of here. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of the normal Trade Winds. The Kona winds bring warm moist air which gets caught on our side of the volcano and we have showers. The one reward for the Kona winds are the rainbows.

Chrissy’s smiling face arrived with the return of the Trade Winds

Maui Beaches
Her first morning was spent trying out her digital camera.

The views from the beach walk in Wailea are just stunning.

She also enjoyed her toes in the sand.

Maui Sunsets

Every evening we enjoyed our sunsets

We all gathered across the street to enjoy the sunsets together. The air is 75 degrees but our Floridians like to wear their sweaters and sweatshirts!

The Blue Water Rafting Trip was a real highlight of the week. Here we are with Chrissy and our friends, Liza & Jeff and BG & Rob. Note the common seaspray windswept hairdos!

The rafting trip was terrific. We had whales breaching around 100 yards from our boat .. What a sight! We made two snorkel stops and the rafting and seeing sea turtles was just great! There were not many people signed up for the afternoon trip to Molakini to snorkel so they invited us along for half price. Chuck & Chrissy & I went and really had a blast. Our boat was the only one there and the water was crystal clear. Molakini is a volcano caldron that is sinking back into the sea .. the center is full of coral and fish and extremely clear. Once you swim over the edge of the caldera the bottom drops off to 300 feet rapidly .. it’s a strange feeling swimming over that edge. Quite honestly I didn’t swim far! Even though it is all well over your head (around 20-30 feet deep in the center area it is quite intimidating to see the bottom drop away.

The Road to Hana

A Maui must do is the Road to Hana. The 40 miles is full of breathtaking scenery and winding roads. It takes several hours to make the drive and photo stops and little hikes are a must.

Note the waterfall in the background.

Another very famous place in Maui is Mama’s Fish House. The food is fabulous and the view is just spectacular. We enjoyed dinner with Chrissy and our friends that night.

The location of Mama’s feels like you are shipwrecked on a tropical island. It’s just gorgeous.

We had dinner with our friends .. the house they rent is just fabulous .. you are greeted at the front door by this wonderful sculpture.

Dinner with our friends at their wonderful place in Maui rivaled Mama’s in elegance and delicious food.

Here we are all together with Chrissy, our friends from the East Coast, Liza, Rob & BG. Our friends from here Sue & John and Evie & Phil also joined us. (Jeff is taking the picture)
