Kauai - Hawaii’s Garden Isle

by Nancy ~ February 24th, 2007. Filed under: Hawaii.

We spent a few days on the lovely Hawaiian island of Kauai. It was a very nostalgic trip for me. The first time I came to Hawaii was 38 years ago and I spent 4 days on Kauai. It brought back vivid memories of being young and delighted. Kauai certainly still brings delight! But it’s hard to believe so many years have gone by!

Kauai is the oldest Hawaiian Island and is therefore the most lush and has the most sandy beaches. Kauai has the most relaxed lifestyle and is full of beaches, waterfalls, rainbows and chickens.

This is one of the beautiful west shore beaches on Kauai. The surf is very rough and the beach is very warm .. and windy on this day.
This blowhole is on the western shore as well.. the wave action builds up and spouts out the hole in the lava. The water is just as blue and sparkling as can be.

One of the real wonders on Kauai is the Waimea Canyon which runs through the island. This is a lookout at the end of the canyon .. It is reported to be one of the most beautiful views of the Pacific. Even though it was still morning when we arrived the clouds had moved up the canyon and you could barely make out the water below.

The Kalalau Valley was “fogged in” when we arrived .. you can just make out the blue of the water.
And so very fortunately within a few minutes the wind blew the clouds away and the sun shining down through them created this gorgeous rainbow! How rare to view a rainbow from above! Now where is that pot of gold?
The photo above is of the Waimea Canyon .. Mark Twain called it the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It is just an incredible view. Note if you click on any of the photos in the blog they will enlarge for a better view. Note the lovely waterfall on the left of the photograph. There’s another photo of that below.
Kauai has waterfalls everywhere! The Canyon gets over 400 inches of rain a year and it rushes down in every direction to the sea. The result is a gorgeous rain forest and waterfalls everywhere. It is really a hikers paradise .. though slippery when wet. And it can be very dangerous. I’ve clustered a few waterfall photos here .. these are just a very few of the many majestic waterfalls on Kauai.

The Queens Bath is a popular bathing pool at the edge of the ocean. On the day we were there the surf was so high it overwhelmed the “bath”. On calm days, especially at low tide you can swim in the bath - on this day you’d probably be swept out to sea.

Kauai has wild chickens everywhere. The roosters are very colorful .. and vocal!

Kileaua Point is a lovely bird refuge

A red footed “boobie”. Boobie watching t-shirts are popular here.

This is also a wonderful point to look for whales.

At the “end of the road” going north on the East Shore is Hanalei. It is a beautiful, remote, sleepy place. A lot of dreadlocks and young people looking for surf.

The Hawaiian people love their churchs and there are many lovely ones here. I thought this was a beautiful church. There are wonderful mountains behind it.

This is just a small sampling of the wonderful sights that Kauai has to offer.
